Education Case Study 1: Georgia State University - AI Chatbot "Pounce"

Georgia State University implemented an AI-enhanced chatbot called “Pounce” starting in 2016 to support students through enrollment and academic challenges. The results have been extensively documented through randomized controlled trials.

Key Results:
  • Students receiving chatbot messages were more likely to pass classes and less likely to drop other courses, with first-generation students earning final grades about 11 points higher than their peers
  • Among non-first-year students, those receiving chatbot messages earned fall term GPAs 0.28 points higher
  • Reduced summer melt from 19% to 9% through text-based engagement
  • Increased likelihood of achieving a B or higher by 5-6 percentage points while reducing course dropout rates

Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota implemented a comprehensive predictive analytics system using Jenzabar Retention technology as part of a five-year persistence and completion project.

  • Overall student retention increased from 90% to 94% of all eligible students between Spring 2015 and Spring 2019
  • Freshman retention specifically improved from 84% to 89% of eligible students over the same period
